Dozens of men and women gathered at the Chandler Park Community Center in Tulsa earlier this week at the Trees of Remembrance ceremony honoring murder victims. Many brought ornaments, notes of remembrance, and other mementos to hang on Christmas Trees in honor of murdered loved ones.
Marsy’s Law for Oklahoma Executive Director Kim Moyer attended the ceremony in solidarity with the survivors of these crimes, and said she was moved by what she saw.
“The families here are grieving, and they are hurting because of their loss,” said Moyer. “At the same time, there is a sense of determination and hope. They are determined to remember and honor their loved ones; and they are determined to move forward and heal. Their stories are heart-wrenching but their resilience is inspiring, and I was honored to be a part of the ceremony.”
The Tulsa County District Attorney’s office organized the annual event. DA Steve Kunzweiler told attendees that “the path you are on right now is not a path you are on yourself,” and that the community of victims and survivors gave each other strength.
The event was another reminder of what – and who – Marsy’s Law is fighting for in Oklahoma. We are honored to play a role in ensuring the rights of these victims are protected and that they are treated fairly and justly by our criminal justice system.
